Update Regarding Marriott’s Fireplace Standards

We wanted to remind you that for the safety of our guests, Marriott’s design standards require that all in-room fireplaces in all hotels have warning signs and a safety barrier to mitigate injuries caused by burns. An operations standard has also been published that provides clear direction regarding safety measures for all fireplaces. The steps described below will satisfy both the design and operational standards.

LOBBY, LOUNGE, AND OUTDOOR FIREPLACES
Control access to fireplace opening: equip fireplace opening with a mesh barrier (such as iron or steel mesh) on a raised platform or other means to mitigate the ability of guests and children to reach into the fire area.

GUESTROOM GLASS FRONT FIREPLACES
All guestroom glass front fireplaces must have proper Warning Signs and Safety Screens:

Warning Signs
Install safety warnings at every fireplace control location by affixing signage adjacent to the fireplace on/off wall switch. If the wall switch is concealed or not fully visible, affix signage near the switch that will provide direct view to guests. This Warning Sign image is acceptable signage.

Safety Screens
Install a mechanically- or magnetically-fastened safety screen to the front of each fireplace with a glass front. The safety screen must have a half-inch (minimum) airspace between the glass and the safety screen. Free-standing safety screens are not approved. Verify with the manufacturer that the safety screen does not impede the safe operation of the fireplace. Click here to locate a retailer or manufacturer.

Hotels may also decide to shut down their in-room fireplaces. If this option is chosen, a hotel must complete all the steps outlined in the standard.

For all renovation and new-build hotels, our teams in The Americas will:

  • Review hotels for compliance during the design and construction phases of the project
  • Review hotels for compliance before providing an Authorization to Open (ATO)
  • Additionally, we will include these requirements as a portion of the Quality Assurance program and in all Property Improvement Plan (PIP) templates.

The safety of our guests is extremely important, and it is incumbent upon all owners and franchisees to operate fireplaces safely, have fireplace protective barriers, and have proper signage warning guests of potential dangers.
