Make a Green Choice (MAGC) and Plant a Tree Sustainability Option Launch Update

Make a Green Choice, Marriott’s guest-facing sustainability program, enables Marriott Bonvoy™ guests staying at least two nights* to have the option to skip housekeeping services and reduce Marriott’s environmental footprint. In exchange for forgoing housekeeping services, guests receive various rewards, such as Marriott Bonvoy™ points.

To further strengthen Marriott’s sustainability messaging, all participating Make a Green Choice (MAGC) hotels* will now be required to offer a sustainability option in addition to the Marriott Bonvoy™ points option. Marriott International has partnered with The Arbor Day Foundation for hotels in the U.S., as well as WEARTH for hotels in Canada, to facilitate the new “plant a tree” option for participating MAGC hotels. Each day a guest foregoes housekeeping, they will earn Marriott Bonvoy™ points OR can now plant a tree with the designated tree partner. This program will support Marriott’s sustainability goal and deliver upon guest preferences.

Based on the success of two pilots in Canada and the U.S., hotels have been able to increase take rates, guest participation and strengthen their sustainable efforts. As a redemption option, the plant a tree option is now the more cost-effective option for hotels: 500 Marriott Bonvoy™ points = $2.74; one tree = $2.00.

Next Steps & Timelines

The continent-wide opt-in became available to hotels on the Q2 Game Plan, and will be in the April 15 Weekly Update and included on Land-It for all MH, RH, GH, JW hotels in the U.S. & Canada. MSB and legacy SPG hotels will follow with implementation planned within Q3.

To help prepare properties for the Make a Green Choice program updates, we recommend the following actions:

  • Review all program details found on the Make a Green Choice MGS
  • Review and decide if your hotel(s) would like to participate in the program.
    • Direct your hotel(s) to opt into the program using the Land-It tasklist pushed to hotels and complete all point and tree tasks to launch the MAGC program with the new sustainability option.
    • If your hotels(s) are already participating in MAGC, hotels will use the Land-It tasklist to complete the “Plant a Tree” items.
    • Participating hotels will go live May 31.
  • Ensure all stakeholders are engaged; including but not limited to: iT, Market Leadership, Accounting, and Operations.
