EMV Chip and PIN Solution

As you know, Marriott has been in the process of evaluating and developing a strategy for the Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV) global standard, otherwise known as Chip and PIN. An extensive RFP was performed to identify a solution that would meet Marriott’s robust requirements. We are now prepared to implement a simple, reliable and cost-effective Chip and PIN solution, in partnership with our selected gateway provider, FreedomPay.

We recognize that some properties are already using a form of Chip and PIN; however, that solution is not integrated with Marriott systems. The new Chip and PIN credit card devices will be fully integrated with Marriott’s POS and PMS systems at outlets including F&B, Retail, Front Desk, Golf and Spa, excluding all third-party outlets.

Note: The deployment will not include former SPG-branded properties until 2021 due to existing contractual commitments. Other properties with existing contractual commitments will not be required to move to this new solution until their existing contract expires.

Specifically, Marriott’s new Chip and PIN solution will:

  • Enable a cost-effective, plug-and-play implementation of Chip and PIN credit card payment devices, with Pay-at-Table capability for F&B outlets with table service and outlets that require mobility
  • Enhance security of transactions to reduce EMV-fraud related chargebacks
  • Improve the customer experience, while laying the foundation for future payment enhancements and capabilities such as alternative payment acceptance, automation, fraud detection, and loyalty support

The deployment of the solution will first focus on properties in the U.S. and Canada. To date, we have conducted several initial testing rounds to ensure viability of this technology within existing systems. In Q3 2019, we will start pre-deployment activities which include signing a Participation Agreement and completing an Equipment Ordering and Property Information Survey. Upon completion of the survey, equipment/device order will be submitted, and billing will be generated. Select properties will also be engaged for a Pilot in Q3.

Once pre-deployment activities are completed, deployment will take place in waves, where properties will be scheduled based on prioritization criteria, and on a first-come, first-served basis based on completion of the pre-deployment activities. We encourage all properties to complete pre-deployment activities as soon as possible. Deployment-specific activities will be shared in upcoming communications.

The identified Chip and PIN solution is a cost-effective option as only a small portion of the cost will be incremental to owners while the rest of the costs will be coming from existing funds. For a detailed review of the costs, refer to the Chip and PIN Cost Breakdown document. The costs will vary by property as it will be driven by the number of outlets, workstations and mobility requirements. Further details on device type and ratio recommendation will also be shared in upcoming communications.

On another note, as a reminder, for third-party payments, Marriott International has partnered with Sertifi eAuthorize to offer a safe and secure tool that can be used by Events, Finance, F&B, Front Office, Group Housing, and Reservations associates on property. The cost of Sertifi eAuthorize is included as part of the Program Services Fund (PSF), and as such, we highly recommend that all hotels use Sertifi eAuthorize.

Should you have any questions about the forthcoming Chip and PIN solution, or implementation of Sertifi eAuthorize, please let us know.
