Microsoft to End Support for Windows Server 2008 Operating System in January 2020
The following information will be shared with hotels via the Nov. 10 Weekly Update.
Microsoft will end support for the Windows Server 2008 operating system during January 2020. In preparation for this deadline and to ensure the security of the Marriott computing environment, in order to maintain connectivity with the Marriott network beyond Jan. 31, 2020, properties that have not already upgraded their servers to a supported operating system will need to complete the following:
- Upgrade to Windows Server 2012 or 2016 by Dec. 31, 2019, if possible, or
- Purchase Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Extended Support through Marriott’s Insight eProcurement portal by Dec. 1, 2019.
The cost for the extended support coverage is $798 per server for one full calendar year (January 2020 – January 2021), and additional details for purchasing the extended support are available via a job aid on MGS. Note: hotels running OPERA PMS must purchase the Extended Support for all OPERA servers on property, regardless of whether the server is connected to the Marriott network. Extended Support is also available as an option for any other servers running Windows Server 2008 not connected to the Marriott network.
The Marriott project team is working on a process to assist properties with upgrading Marriott-networked servers to a supported operating system and details will be communicated shortly. Servers still on Server 2008 that have not purchased Extended Support are planned to be blocked from the Marriott network beginning January 30, 2020.
