April 7, 2017 Integration Updates

American Express Service Agreement Information for Former Starwood Properties

Following the merger, former Starwood properties now fall under the terms of Marriott International’s Card Services agreement with American Express. With this change in the agreement, the following changes became effective April 1, 2017.

  1. The global interchange rate for former Starwood hotel charges made with American Express Cards will be reduced from 2.95% to 2.90%.
  2. Former Starwood hotels will receive a slightly higher rebate for HiRoc (Meetings/Events) transactions from the lowest spend tier – $20K – $90K. The interchange discount will increase from 55 bps to 60 bps.

American Express will ensure this change takes place; no additional work is required by the hotels. Under this new agreement, former Starwood Managed by Marriott and franchised hotels globally are expected to save a total of $3M-$4M per year.

Please note, this Marriott International Agreement with American Express will expire on December 31, 2017. We will keep you informed of any changes to the agreement that result from this renewal. Additionally, in the event there are additional changes to credit card processing fees, we will notify you as soon as possible.

If there are any questions regarding this rate change, please contact the MBS Credit Card Operations team at creditcard.operations@marriott.com.
